(IINews) - A liquid ring pump is a positive displacement pump that is often utilized as vacuum pump however; it may sometimes function as gas compressor. The most frequently used liquid for this pump is water. It forms liquid seal to achieve vacuum.

Working of Liquid ring pumps

Liquid ring vacuum pumps consist of cylindrical casing with an impeller which is attached to the internal hub. Impeller is attached with vanes (blades) that rotate and allow gas to be compressed.
The foremost requirement for liquid ring pumps is a liquid or sealant to create vacuum. The pump should be partially filled with the sealant before it is turned on. Depending on the operation to be executed by the pump, one can use water, oil or solvent as sealant. And when the pump is powered off, some of the impeller vanes are submerged in the liquid.

On supplying the liquid to the pump it gets activated and a stirring cylindrical ring is formed inside the sheath due to centrifugal acceleration. Centrifugal force creates a chain of seals by the liquid ring which in turn seals off the empty spaces between the impeller vanes. This mechanism leads to the formation of compression chambers. These compression chambers lock the gas that is drawn inside through the inlet port at the end of the casing. When the volume decreases, the rotation of the impeller condenses the gas and because the compression is of highest degree, the gas along with some liquid sealant is released through the discharge port.

Contrary to centrifugal pumps, liquid ring pumps are used to expel air out of low pressure vessels to drop the vessel pressure below atmospheric pressure and thus vacuum conditions are created.
The primary difference between the design of liquid ring pumps and other pumps is the position of the impeller. In liquid ring pumps the impeller is located off-set from the center of the pump. The off-center location implies that the vanes on top of the pump are closer to the outer wall compared to those at the side and bottom of the pump. This relative eccentricity results in the compression of the gas.

The extensive use of liquid ring pumps is in industries like pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, food manufacturing and health sectors amongst others. These pumps are used widely because of some of these features: easy maintenance, presence of only single moving part, absence of metal-to-metal contact and no requirement of internal lubrication.
